Spelling

Week 4 Spelling
Week 3 Spelling
Each week a specific phonics skill will be the focus. A few words will be presented to the students demonstrating that skill. A word wall will be used to display the words and use it as a reference throughout the year. The words will fit into one of the three categories:

1.    “Star Words” are words with a rime pattern. With these words you can spell many more words. “Star Words” will be application words on the spelling test. For example, the student may be given the word cat*. Since many words have the same spelling pattern as cat, the students will be asked to apply the “at” sound to other words (to spell words like bat, hat, mat, etc.). They will not be told in advance what application words will be given.

2.    “Regular Words” are words that can be sounded out but do not follow a common spelling pattern. Example: him, after

3.     “Red Words” are words that have unusual spellings and can’t be sounded out. These words just need to be memorized because they do not follow common spelling rules. Example: the, said, two

Once the words have been taught, they will be placed on the word wall and the students will be accountable for the word/sound for the rest of the year. The old sounds will be continuously practiced and reviewed.

*Spelling tests are on Friday mornings after library.
*Make up tests will be given the first day a student returns after missing a spelling test day.
